More Alabama families will be eligible for food assistance due to income guidelines changes in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, also known as WIC.
2022 federal poverty guidelines have increased, making more people eligible, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. Pregnant women, those who have had a baby within the past six months or are currently breastfeeding or are the parent or guardian of a child up to age 5, are eligible to apply at their local county health department or WIC agency.
“WIC encourages families to be healthy by providing nutritious foods that support optimal growth and development. Nutritious foods help pregnant women have healthy babies and help children grow to become healthy adults. Alabama’s WIC program understands the struggles many families face to establish healthy eating habits, and WIC is here to help women, infants, and children in Alabama,” Allison Hatchett, Alabama WIC Director, said.

- Family of 2 – $33,874 annual income, $652 weekly income

- Family of 5 – $60,070 annual income, $1,156 weekly income

Families who receive Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) already meet the income qualifications for WIC.
