When I first told the world (aka you) that I have excess skin I had a vulnerability hangover.
At that time I was just learning to accept it for what it is. And now I understand it is a part of my body and I really no longer consider it “excess”, because it is just my skin.
It is skin that has been with me through the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. It is a reminder of where I’ve come from and how much I’ve grown and changed in such a short time.
I do believe that my skin has been my biggest lesson in self-love because it forced me to look at myself, to sit with myself and find comfort in the uncomfortable.
So instead of fighting it (like I did for years) I finally chose to embrace it. I realized that it is a part of my body just as much as my 10 fingers and 10 toes, and I offer them no shame. I allow my fingers and toes to be just what they are without any judgement at all. Why should my skin (or any body part for that matter) be any different?
These days I offer every inch of my skin love and gratitude – thanking it for lining each curve of my present body. I remember the first time I stood naked in front of a full-length mirror and began to offer each part of my body love – to say it was hard is an understatement. It almost felt almost unbearable, there were tears as I pushed through my discomfort. Needless to say, that practice was a major catalyst in changing how I viewed my body and my skin. Because you cannot hate something and love it at the same time. So choose the latter.
Even though I’m not ready to bare it all to the world – I am here in love.
